From BKK to Khao San Road
Khao San Road sits in the old town, away from the BTS, MRT and Airport Rail Link, so a taxi or private transfer (about 400–500 THB, 45–70 minutes) is usually the sensible choice. Budget travellers can combine the ARL with a short taxi from Phaya Thai.

Why there is no direct train
Khao San is in Rattanakosin, the historic royal district, which the Airport Rail Link, BTS and MRT do not reach directly. The nearest rail is the MRT Blue line at Sam Yot or Sanam Chai, still a short taxi or walk from Khao San.
That makes a taxi or private transfer the most direct option — the meter plus the 50 THB surcharge and tolls comes to roughly 400–500 THB.
Budget route via the Airport Rail Link
To save money, take the ARL to Phaya Thai (15–45 THB) and grab a metered taxi or Grab for the last few kilometres to Khao San. It avoids the airport surcharge and part of the traffic.
About Khao San Road
Khao San Road is the backpacker heart of Bangkok — a short, dense strip of guesthouses, bars, street food and travel agencies in the historic Rattanakosin district. It is within walking distance of the city's headline sights, the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Phra Kaew, which is a big part of why travellers base themselves here.
The trade-off is transport: there is no BTS, MRT or Airport Rail Link station nearby, so you rely on taxis, buses or the Chao Phraya river boats to move around. For the airport run that means a taxi or transfer, or the ARL combined with a short taxi from Phaya Thai.
