Inside the terminal

Suvarnabhumi is built around a single, very large main terminal rather than several numbered ones. All check-in is on level 4 (departures) and arrivals come out on level 2, with immigration and baggage claim between them; concourses A to G branch off the main building for the gates.

Since September 2023 a satellite terminal, SAT-1, adds more gates. It has no check-in of its own — you reach it from the main terminal on a free, automated underground train (the APM) that takes only a couple of minutes, so you may ride it to or from your gate without it changing how you get into the city.

Getting from Suvarnabhumi into Bangkok

There are four realistic ways into town. The Airport Rail Link (City Line) leaves from basement level B and reaches Phaya Thai in about 30 minutes for 15–45 THB — the cheapest and most traffic-proof option, with interchanges to the BTS Skytrain at Phaya Thai and the MRT near Makkasan.

A metered public taxi from the level 1 rank is the simplest door-to-door choice: the meter plus a 50 THB airport surcharge and 25–75 THB of expressway tolls, usually 350–500 THB to the central districts. Public buses from the Public Transportation Centre are cheaper still but slow, and a pre-booked private transfer meets you at arrivals for a fixed price.

Money, SIM cards and your first hour

Do one thing before you leave the arrivals hall: get some Thai baht in cash. The metered public taxi, its 50 THB airport surcharge and the expressway tolls are all paid in cash, and the official rank is on level 1 — not the level 2 arrivals floor, where touts offer inflated fixed fares. ATMs and currency-exchange booths sit throughout arrivals; rates are usually a little better in the city, so change just enough for the ride and your first day.

Prepaid tourist SIM and eSIM counters from the main Thai mobile networks are in the arrivals hall, and a local data plan is what makes Grab, Bolt and maps usable from the kerb. Free airport wifi is available too, so you can set up an eSIM or confirm a transfer before you step outside.

Transit, layovers and 24-hour facilities

Suvarnabhumi runs around the clock, so late arrivals and long layovers are normal here. If you are only connecting, you usually stay airside and follow the transit signs; passengers using a gate in the SAT-1 satellite ride the free underground APM train between it and the main terminal in a couple of minutes, so leave a little extra time for a far gate.

The terminal has the facilities you would expect of a major hub: 24-hour dining, ATMs and exchange, left-luggage counters, pharmacies, prayer rooms and paid lounges and rest zones for sleeping between flights. Because immigration queues can be long at peak arrival banks, give yourself margin rather than booking the tightest possible connection.

Suvarnabhumi (BKK) vs Don Mueang (DMK)

Bangkok has two airports and travellers often mix them up. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is the main international gateway and handles most full-service and long-haul flights. Don Mueang (DMK), about 40 km away on the north side of the city, is the older low-cost hub for AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Lion Air. The quickest way to tell which one you need is the three-letter code on your ticket: BKK is Suvarnabhumi, DMK is Don Mueang.

There is no direct rail link between the two. For passengers connecting between the airports on a single booking, AOT operates a free shuttle bus — bring your onward boarding pass; everyone else takes a metered taxi, which is roughly an hour depending on traffic, paid on the meter plus tolls. Because that transfer can eat an hour or more, treat any self-arranged connection that switches airports with caution and never book the tightest possible gap — a common trap on cheap multi-leg itineraries.

Getting to Suvarnabhumi for your flight

Everything on this page works in reverse when it's time to fly out. The Airport Rail Link runs from Phaya Thai and Makkasan back to the terminal basement in about 26–30 minutes and is the one option immune to Bangkok's traffic, so it's the safest bet in the morning and evening peaks. A metered taxi, Grab or a pre-booked transfer takes you straight to the terminal, but leave a generous margin — the expressway to the airport can clog without warning.

Departures and all check-in counters are on Level 4 of the main terminal. Give yourself around three hours for an international flight and two for a domestic one, and more if you're checking bags or travelling during a holiday peak. If your gate turns out to be in the SAT-1 satellite, you'll ride the free underground APM train after security, so allow a few extra minutes to reach a far gate.
